Sure, traveling alone sounds adventurous and exciting, but before you pack your bags, you need to consider the safety factor involved in doing so. You’re venturing into unfamiliar territory, so it’s essential to have your wits and always be aware of your surroundings to ensure you don’t become the victim of a crime or abduction attempt. To get an idea of where in the world it’s not safe to travel alone as a woman or man, use this list as your guide. Here is my list of the worst countries to travel alone.
Serbia
In Serbia, alcohol consumption has been a part of their culture for centuries. While most Serbians are not openly hostile to foreigners, it’s not uncommon for them to get very aggressive at night when they have had too much to drink. It’s always better to have a local show you around than risk walking around alone at night in urban areas like Belgrade and Novi Sad.
United Arab Emirates
The U.A.E (United Arab Emirates) is one of those nations with a few things going for it and many more going against it as a traveler’s destination. I wouldn’t recommend traveling alone, although many travelers have gone alone and had good experiences. But there’s plenty of warning to be had here: women traveling alone should avoid wearing revealing clothes and never go anywhere alone at night.
Cambodia
With a 50% murder rate, crime is rampant in Cambodia. Street assaults, muggings, and more all make Cambodia one of the worst countries to travel alone. Some say that it’s just not worth it to visit here at all. If you decide to visit, stick with your larger tour groups and only go out when accompanied by others. By sticking together, you can minimize your risk of dangerous situations altogether. For example, instead of going out for drinks with friends or meeting new people at nightclubs or bars, try going on a group bike ride through town or walking around during daylight hours. You’ll be much safer and enjoy yourself more if you are careful while traveling in Cambodia. Remember that no matter where you are in the world, there will always be people who want to take advantage of tourists—so don’t let your guard down!
Kenya
While Kenya is a great country with a welcoming culture, traveling to Kenya as a solo female traveler can be dangerous. Men often will try to chat up young women on public transportation and while walking around Nairobi. The most dangerous area of Nairobi is South B or Upper Hill, where you are more likely to encounter pickpocketing and opportunistic crimes, especially at night.
Tunisia
With a high crime rate and widespread political unrest, it’s best to avoid traveling here solo. (Budget travelers often see Tunisia as a good alternative to Egypt.) I think that says something about whether or not it is safe for tourists; clearly, it isn’t. Also, be sure to check whether or not your U.S. insurance will cover you if you decide to travel here alone! The likelihood of an accident happening in any given place at any given time significantly increases when you are on your own. While some accidents can occur even when traveling with others, statistically speaking, there are fewer instances of injury and death when you have someone else with you than when you don’t. Whether by yourself or with friends, always remember to practice safety precautions such as staying aware of your surroundings—and never leaving valuables unattended.
Dominican Republic
It’s one of the most beautiful countries, with friendly locals and incredible Caribbean beaches. However, pickpocketing, assault, and armed robberies against foreigners sometimes occur. Do not put your hands on anyone here unless you want to go to jail. Pickpockets also operate in most major cities in the Dominican Republic. Be careful when riding public transportation at night, as thieves are known to rob unsuspecting tourists.
Morocco
Morocco is one of Africa’s most prominent tourist destinations, but it can also be one of its most dangerous. The beautiful beaches are great for sunbathing, but they’re also highly populated and frequented by pickpockets and shoplifters. Make sure to stick to well-populated areas during daylight hours. Tourism is a large part of Morocco’s economy, so petty theft or pickpocketing isn’t looked down upon like it might be in other countries.
Iran
Although Iran is on many people’s travel bucket lists, it’s probably not a good idea to book a solo trip. This Persian country is beautiful and full of history, but it has some strict rules regarding allowing American citizens into its borders. If you want to visit Iran—and we think you should—it might be best to go with an organized tour group or contact your embassy before booking your ticket.
India
The tourism board of India does a lot to promote their country and make it welcoming to outsiders. The problem is that most tourists go for two months, so there’s no one around at night. And in terms of violent crime, India ranks second worldwide for murders and rapes. It doesn’t help that many Indian men have traditional views of women. So, if you are a woman traveling alone, be prepared to deal with catcalls, unwanted touches, and even sexual assault (yes—that includes rape).
Afghanistan
While war and violence are never a fun experience, they’re especially frightening when you’re alone. The United States Department of State has issued travel warnings for Afghanistan due to terrorist activities throughout most parts of the country. If you go, stick to popular hotels in Kabul and avoid any journey by road.
